SUMMARY


This book is a result of research made by an international collective of authors, who studied history of pacifism and peace-making. It is a third book on history of pacifism published by Institute of World History in recent years, after «Peace/Mir.An Anthology of historic alternatives to war» (1993) and «Long Way of Russian Pacifism.Ideal of international and inner peace in Russian religio-philosophical and socio-political thought» (1997).«Pacifism in History» contains chapters on history of World pacifism in Europe, Asia and America since ancient times until the World War II. The first chapter deals with the sources of peace ideas in ancient Greek and Roman culture and in early Christianity.Then chapters on early Quakers and on ideas of peace during the European Enlightenment follow, and after them — chapters on creating peace societies and peace doctrine in Europe in 19thCentury.Special chapters deal with such significant figures of peace ideas and practice as Leo Tolstoy, M. Gandhi,KanU Vay. Some detailed analysis is given concerning Scandinavian, British, German, French, American,JapanesePacifism of 19thand 20thCenturies. Scholars from Germany, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, USA, Russia and Japan made their contributions to this volume.
